Server 1 – Optimization

Today the server has been configured and additional applications have been installed to make the server perform even better than it currently does. Firstly, phpaccelerator was installed on to the server, this will enable faster processing of all php files on the server. Secondly, the mySQL settings on the server were tweaked to allow great memory usage for mySQL. This means that applications that work based off mySQL (such as forum software, galleries etc) will now run faster and page load time will be shorter. This is the latest upgrade in our continued efforts to make our customers experience as pleasant as possible.

PHP5 Coming Soon!

This is just a notice to inform you that PHP5 will be installed onto our server within the next couple of months. I do not have an exact date as of yet, as the datacenter are working through all of the servers one by one (there are thousands!).

PHP will be version 4 by default as it has been. But you can use .php5 as the extension for any single file you want parsed with PHP5. If you would like all of your .php pages to parse as PHP5 exclusivly, you just add a line to your .htaccess file:

Code: Select all
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php

Else just leave it as it is, and make use of the .php5 extension

If you only wish to use PHP4 and all your sites are fine on PHP4 then you don’t have to do anything. Using PHP5 is completely optional as I have made sure that our current version (PHP4) will remain on the server exactly as it has been.

Server Upgrades…Yes, MORE!

You may have noticed the server has been having a few problems the last few weeks – slow points, outages and downtime. Well hopefully this will now be fixed. Last night the server was down for a few upgrades. Firstly, I had the operating system reinstalled; there may have been a problem before causing the system to crash. Secondly, I have added a second hard drive to the server. Now, the whole server is backed up automatically every single day – so in the event you have any little problems it will take a few seconds to restore the backup after contacting me. Lastly, I’ve bought an extra stick of RAM taking us up to 1.5GB, this was not necessary but I thought it’s best to have more than not enough. My pocket’s a little lighter, but well worth the investment in my opinion.
